When Douglas County decided how to ring in 2026, fireworks were not the obvious answer. Winter along the Front Range is dry, and a pyrotechnic show over a packed stadium means sparks, falling debris and a fire risk county officials did not want to carry into the new year.
So the county went a different direction. On New Year’s Eve, Hire UAV Pro launched 400 drones above EchoPark Stadium, and the switch was covered by Denver7 as a safer way to celebrate.
Why Drones Instead of Fireworks
For a county, the case for drones comes down to four things.
- Fire safety. Drones carry LEDs, not explosives. Nothing burns, nothing falls, and there is no ignition source over dry ground.
- No debris. There is no casing, ash or residue to clean off a stadium, a field or nearby homes the next morning.
- Noise. A drone show is close to silent. That matters for pets, wildlife, veterans and anyone living near the venue.
- A message in the sky. Drones can spell out the year, a county seal or a thank-you to residents. Fireworks cannot.
We have covered the full comparison, including cost, in drone shows vs fireworks.
What Goes Into a 400-Drone Stadium Show
A show like this is mostly preparation. The eight or ten minutes the crowd sees rests on weeks of work beforehand.
- Site survey. We map the launch zone, the flight area above the stadium and the separation between drones and the crowd.
- Airspace authorization. The Denver metro sits under busy airspace. Every show we fly is authorized and coordinated in advance under FAA rules, flown by Part 107 certified pilots.
- Show design. Every formation is animated in-house and previewed in 3D before a single drone leaves the ground.
- Weather planning. Winter shows bring cold and wind. We plan go/no-go thresholds and a backup window before show night.
- Insurance. We carry $10 million in coverage and issue certificates directly to the venue and the county.
A Long-Running Relationship
New Year’s Eve was not our first show for Douglas County. We have also flown the Douglas County Fair, and repeat clients like the county are the best indicator we have that a drone show delivers. When a municipality books a second and third show, it is because residents came back.
What Other Cities and Counties Can Take From It
- Start early. New Year’s Eve and July 4th are the two busiest nights of the year for drone shows. Sixty to ninety days out is comfortable; peak dates book sooner.
- Pick the venue for the audience, not the launch. Stadiums work well because seating is fixed and sightlines are good. We handle where the drones launch.
- Use the sky to say something. The year, a local landmark, a sponsor logo. A drone show is a message as much as a spectacle.
We fly for cities, counties and festivals across the country, and Colorado is our home base. If your community is weighing a switch from fireworks, the cost guide is a good place to start.
Why a Stadium Works So Well
EchoPark Stadium solved most of the hard problems before we arrived. Seating is fixed, so we knew exactly where every spectator would be. Sightlines are clean in every direction. There is controlled ground for a launch zone away from the crowd, and parking and crowd flow are already built for large events.
For a county weighing venues, that is worth more than it sounds. A show over an open park needs far more planning around where people will gather, and a crowd spreads unpredictably once it is dark and cold.
Flying a Winter Show
New Year’s Eve brings cold and wind, both of which affect drone performance. Cold reduces battery capacity, so we plan flight time with that margin built in, and we set explicit wind thresholds with a go/no-go call made well before the crowd arrives rather than on the night. The upside is that winter air is clear, and formations read sharply from a long way back.
Colorado Keeps Choosing Drones
We also fly the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo at up to 750 drones, Parker Fall Fest at 300, and Western Welcome Week in Littleton. See Denver, Colorado Springs and Colorado for the rest, or corporate drone shows and events if you are planning a company celebration rather than a civic one.
