Case Study: The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Drone Show That Fire Season Couldn’t Cancel

Client: Douglas County Fair & Rodeo
Location: Douglas County Fairgrounds, Castle Rock, Colorado
Dates: July 24 – August 2, 2026
Shows: Opening night and an encore
Fleet: Up to 750 drones, Damoda system

The Challenge

The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo is one of Colorado’s biggest summer events: ten days of PRCA rodeo, headline concerts, a carnival and, at its heart, a working livestock fair. It also runs through late July, the peak of Front Range fire season.

That combination rules out a lot of traditional night-sky entertainment. Fireworks bring sparks and debris over dry ground, and noise that frightens the animals in the barns a few hundred yards away. The fair needed a headline moment that was spectacular, safe to fly in fire season and quiet enough for a fairground full of livestock.

The Solution

Hire UAV Pro produced drone shows for the fair’s opening night and an encore performance. Opening night followed Castle Rock’s Western Heritage Welcome cattle drive and the fair’s kickoff concert, giving the crowd a finale after the headliner.

Local coverage from Discover DougCo described the 2026 lineup as including “a drone show finale that this fire season cannot touch”, which is exactly the point. A drone show carries no pyrotechnics and nothing that can ignite, so it goes ahead in conditions where fireworks would be pulled.

What Went Into It

  • Site planning around a working fairground. Launch zone, flight area and crowd separation planned around the arena, grandstands and livestock areas.
  • Airspace authorization. Coordinated in advance under FAA rules and flown by Part 107 certified pilots.
  • Custom show design. Formations built in-house and previewed in 3D before approval.
  • Two performances. Once the crew and fleet are on site, an encore adds a second big night for far less than the first.
  • Insurance. Covered by $10 million in insurance, with certificates issued to the venue.

Why It Works for Fairs

  • Fire season stops being a risk to the finale. No burn ban or red-flag warning cancels the show on account of fire.
  • The animals stay calm. Drones are close to silent compared with fireworks.
  • Nothing to clean up. No debris on the arena, midway or barns.
  • Repeatable. Multi-night fairs can run the show more than once.

A Repeat Relationship

Douglas County is a returning client. We have also flown the county’s New Year’s Eve show over EchoPark Stadium, and repeat bookings like these are the clearest sign a drone show is delivering for the community.

If you run a fair or festival, see our guide to adding a drone show to your county fair or festival, or explore our Colorado drone light shows.

What This Means If You Run a Fair

Fair boards ask us the same three questions, so here are the answers up front.

Will it survive a burn ban? Yes. There is no ignition source, so a red-flag warning does not cancel your headline act. For a fair that has already sold tickets and booked a grandstand crowd, that reliability is usually the deciding factor.

What about the animals? A drone show is close to silent. Livestock in the barns a few hundred yards from the arena stay calm, which is not true of a fireworks display.

Can a sponsor pay for it? Often, yes. Drones can form a presenting sponsor’s logo above the entire fairground, which is a materially better package than a banner on a fence. Many fairs we work with offset a large share of the cost this way.

Douglas County Keeps Rebooking

The fair is not a one-off for us. We also flew the county’s New Year’s Eve show over EchoPark Stadium at 400 drones. Repeat bookings from the same client are the clearest evidence a show delivered, because a county does not come back for a second and third performance out of politeness.

Colorado is our home market — we are based in Arvada, twenty minutes from downtown Denver. See Denver drone light shows, Colorado Springs, or our full Colorado coverage.
