Can You Do a Drone Light Show Anywhere? Venue and Location Guide
One of the most common questions we receive is whether a drone light show can be performed at a specific location. The short answer is that drone shows can be performed in an impressively wide range of venues and locations, but not literally everywhere. Understanding the factors that determine whether a location is suitable helps you evaluate your venue options and have productive conversations with your drone show provider.
The good news is that the list of places where drone shows can be performed is much longer than the list of places where they cannot. Parks, fairgrounds, beaches, stadiums, golf courses, vineyards, private estates, hotel grounds, parking lots, open fields, and even some urban settings are all viable drone show locations. The technology and regulatory framework have evolved to accommodate most common event venues.
The factors that determine venue suitability fall into three categories: physical space requirements, airspace regulations, and safety considerations. An experienced drone show provider evaluates all three during the site assessment process, which is typically conducted using satellite imagery and maps, supplemented by an in-person visit for larger or more complex events.
Physical Space and Airspace Requirements
The minimum physical requirement is a flat, open area of approximately 100 by 100 feet for the drone launch grid, free from overhead obstructions. The audience viewing area should be at least 200 feet from the launch zone. Most outdoor event venues meet these requirements easily, though urban settings may require creative solutions for launch placement.
Airspace is the more complex factor. The FAA controls all airspace in the United States, and drone shows require authorization to operate in the specific airspace above the performance venue. Most locations receive authorization routinely, but venues within a few miles of airports, military installations, or other sensitive facilities require additional coordination and longer lead times. Your drone show provider handles all airspace coordination, but knowing the proximity to these facilities helps set timeline expectations.
Challenging Locations We Have Handled
Over 900 shows of experience has given us the ability to execute in challenging and diverse locations. We have performed on beachfronts in California, at urban piers in San Francisco, at resorts in Los Angeles, and in cities across the country including Chicago, New York, and Atlanta. Each venue presented unique logistics that our team navigated successfully.
If you have a venue in mind and are unsure whether a drone show is feasible, the best step is to simply ask. We evaluate venue feasibility at no cost during the initial consultation, and we can usually make a preliminary assessment based on the address alone. Reach out with your venue details and we will let you know what is possible.
